| An updated and expanded version of the History of the Free Church has been written to mark the church's centenary. The first version appeared in 1984 and brought the story up to 1975. A further section covering the years 1976-to 1997 came out in 2003. The new history has a final chapter covering the period 1998 to mid 2006, but is also a much fuller account of the Free Church's history, drawing on sources other than the church's own records.
The history of the earlier years has been considerably expanded, especially the chapters on the origins of the church in the first years of the 20th century, and its relation to the birth and growth of Amersham-on-the Hill. There is much more information about people like Alfred Ellis, who took the lead in starting the church and was its lay president until 1924 when the first minister was appointed, and William Sumner, the owner of the Bijou Hall in Station Road where the first services were held. They and others also played a part in the development of the town as well as church. The history also contains an account of the building and opening of the first church in 1911 designed by John Harold Kennard who made a major contribution to the buildings in the town. The development of the Free Church is described in the wider setting of the moves to establish Free Churches rather than purely denominational congregations in the first decades of the 20th century. Later chapters also place the life and work of the Free Church in the wider settings of trends in the church nationally and local developments. The History has 22 illustrations and costs £5. |
